The story

So, I wanted to buy a Seth Godin's book, The Bootstrapper's Bible: Volume 1 (Amazon fails to ship to me, so I'd eventually buy Seth's other books for a paperback price, if he had them in a digital format, too). For such a price, lower than any e-book I know - and of much greater value, I thought this was worth having.

(Btw, if you haven't read Seth's free e-book "Unleashing the Ideavirus", you must, ought to, have to and are absolutely obliged to read it. It is about why ideas rule the world and how you can make them spread for your benefit.

The button on the right, aptly named "Buy now with 1-Click®", was convincing enough.

So, I clicked and a window appeared, asking for registering or logging in (Bad) (why not do it using the info I use in buying the book, anyway?).

The form had my email address entered and simply wanted my password (Good - they remembered me and my email address).

The next window wanted my payment method, name, credit card number and card expiration date. So far so good, but it wasn't the entire "1-Click®" purchase, though.

After clicking continue, I was hoping to get my e-book. Not so fast. It wanted my new billing information, prompting for no country, but absolutely requiring me to select a state (from the US states) (Bad)

When I did, it needed a zipcode, matching a state. Fun. Luckily, I remembered a 95001 zip code for California (CA), so I went through this hurdle, too. What would happen to some foreigner not familiar with the zipcodes of the US states I don't know (a lost sale, maybe?).

After clicking "Continue" for the 4th time (apart from clicking on the "Buy now" button), I got the following message:

All Amazon Digital transactions are completed with 1-Click® to provide you with a quick and easy purchase process.

Your e-Document purchase will be completed when you click "Continue" and your credit card will be charged. Your purchase will be available for you to download immediately.

Talking about the easy process after 4-5 clicks seems like an attempt to make fun of me. Don't make fun of your customers (please, Amazon). (To be fair, the same message does appear when you do have the "1-Click®" option enabled, after clicking on it).

While the usefulness of the above passage is disputable (I'd say that in order to reduce the amount of clicks, this step must have been spotlessly eliminated), I had to click the "Continue" button for the 5th time of 1 promised by the luring button. (Bad, yet again)

And, being pumped up during the buying/ordering/hacking process and that passage, I get the following message:

We could not process your order because of geographical restrictions on the product which you were attempting to purchase. Please refer to the terms of use for this product to determine the geographical restrictions.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Sorry, Amazon. Five clicks instead of one I can forgive (and Yoda speak I too can), but not letting me download an e-book, is out of place. You've just lost my loyalty and joined the ranks of "Will use as the last choice only" companies that I appear to have now. (Need I repeat myself?)

What's wrong

Here's what is wrong:

asking me to register before purchasing is no good (asking me to log in to use my already entered information is good, but you have to really use the information)
asking for my billing address, while having my credit card details, seems out of place, as I seem to have some info in my account (it appears the "1-Click" option needs to be turned on, but why not turn it on automatically, when the button is pressed, if the required information is present?)
if you are selling internationally (digital products sell this way, mostly), allow the form to accept any information (avoid things that annoy international shoppers)
restricting the purchase to the USA is the worst mistake you can make. In the spirit of Seth Godin (who inspires people to share stuff), a thought to limit distribution should not exist at all
telling me to go back to check the terms of use for the product is one thing, but not giving me a direct link is a crime. Give me a link, don't make me go back 6 pages back and try to find it.
and the funniest thing is, there was not only a not obvious "terms of use for this product", but there is no such a link at all on the long, detailed page.

How to do it right

So, if you want to be better than Amazon, remember this:

[if you do promise a way to buy in one click] do strive to make the process obvious (for people to use it) and reduce the number of clicks/characters entered ruthlessly (such as making fewer ordering steps and required forms to be filled)
make your button labels obvious and true (show links how to them, too)
if you want your visitors to register, try to use their ordering information and make this process as easy as possible
if the item has "geographical restrictions", do everything to remove them and make sure the customer can get what he/she wants
if you still have them, make them obvious on the product page, not after 5 (or more, if you are a new customer) pages of entering information and clicking through
in forms, place form labels above the fields, not on the side
on the error page, provide clear ways to solve it (a link to a page with useful info will help a lot)

As you can see, this list is pretty general what people say you can do to improve your shopping cart, so putting things into practice should clearly help you reduce cart abandonment rate.

I started writing this article with an emphasis on the financial domain. I then realized that I would like to broaden the focus because my findings are also applicable to a general domain like email account registrations, for example. In this article, I would like to take a simple example of how users register for an email account online. For a first timer, is the transition from a real world of letter writing to the online medium easy? And for a frequent user, is he or she motivated enough to create an email account with another service provider?

Yes, this is for all of you out there—my fellow usability practitioners, information architects, designers, managers, project leads, editors, and people who are looking to develop their UX practice.

In the modern family, where often both parents are working full-time and the children are involved in many after-school activities, people may only have a few minutes to spare on an important task during the day. And it’s the Internet that supposedly helps people achieve this. But do we, as designers and usability practitioners, always help them do it? I say, “No.”

Just the other day, a friend of mine begins to complain of the spam mails that she receives everyday. “I have two separate email ID’s to keep myself away from such mails—one for official purposes and the other for my junk emails. But even my official ID seems to be flooded with these emails. So I found myself moving to another email service provider. Again, I found myself grappling with the registration process.”

There are three people who determine success of a web-based form: the usability practitioner, the designer, and the user (Image 1). Taking a simple everyday example like an email service, I aim to discuss the various aspects that lead to a great forms structure.

1. Affordance: The Lure

We all know how grueling and tedious a registration process can be. Therefore, we need to ensure that our sites adequately “lure” users into the process. To do this successfully is not just a matter of providing the right cues, but how and where we provide them.

Coming from the real world

Every online form was created keeping the real world in mind. We all once began filling in forms in real life before we began moving to the online medium of getting things done quicker.

Email service providers must allow for a smooth transition from a real world scenario to the internet, for those who are petrified of it. Users should know the advantages of the service provided as compared to the real world scenario of letter writing. Why would users move to your service when they can just write a letter? What are the advantages of sending an email? Is it quick? It is easy? These issues should be addressed upfront to ensure that they are lured forward.

None of the websites that I reviewed follow this practice effectively.

Entry points

An entry point to an application must be clear and appropriate to the specific needs of the user. For example, let’s say a user visits a website to send out an email to a distant relative. He or she has never used a web-based email service before. Not knowing that he/she needs to register, they would look for a direct cue to send out an email. Where do you think this user would look for a cue? This is where you need to perform a quick goal-task analysis. Let’s consider a scenario:

A first timer enters the website to send out an email. This user is hauled because he/she is unsure of their next step.

Let’s have a look at Gmail, our most used email provider. Most websites that I reviewed allow you to register. But users are not lured into it. As a first time user of a website, they need to know the benefits of registering clearly, up front. Gmail does a good job of this (Image 2).

Users often hate to register. Therefore, as usability practitioners, we need to tell them of the benefits of registration when they enter a website for the first time.

Service/Product comparison

Remember, your users are watching your competitors as well. So if you aren’t that big in the market, how exactly would you think big? Compare your features with that of your competitors to formulate your strengths over the others in the market. Let’s see how Bluebottle effectively does this (Image 3).

Online benefits

It is important to inform the user up front of what they will gain after registering. It’s a competitive world out there and users must and should know what the website is selling them. This affirms the brand’s identity and responsibility to gain customers online. A basic cue reassuring users about the benefits helps build trust which encourages them to use your services. As shown in image 2, Gmail clearly provides the online benefits.

Another clever way to entice them is to provide a view of what the service looks like once they have registered or applied. In this case, it would be ideal to show users on the homepage a view of what their personal landing page (the inbox) would look like once they have registered.

None of the websites that I reviewed follow this practice rightly.

Security

It is essential that users know that the information they are entering will be secure. A basic “Lock” or “Key” icon would do the trick. Also, providing them with security information and its benefits improves customer loyalty and trust. With the case of Yahoo, the website uniquely utilizes this feature to grab users towards their secure service (Image 4).

Taking a tour

Before users move ahead to encounter a form, it is necessary to tell them why they need to do it and most importantly how they need to do it. Again, taking the same examples forward, if you look at the example below, you will see how AIM Mail allows users to take a tour (Image 5). This also gives an edge to its competitors as they are showing them of what’s inside even before registering.

User’s path forward

This doesn’t just end with the benefits. Users have to be told where to go after they have been guided. All websites do provide a way to move ahead. But I specifically want to use an example that can show improvement in terms of placement of this cue, which is most important while users are making a decision.

We love Gmail. But we sometimes wish it were always right.

Provide users with a clear path forward AFTER you are done enticing them with the meat.

Consistent design

As users transition from the homepage to the form, it is important that the design of the pages remain consistent. Any small change in the design or layout could affect their performance and decrease the overall experience.

Most websites get this right. But we can still look for improvement. Let’s have a look at the example below (Image 7). Here, as users move from the landing page to the form, we see significant changes in the layout and the visual design.

An overview of what’s to come

As users enter the application, they need to know what to expect, however short it maybe. Therefore, throwing users directly into a form is not the best way to help them achieve their goals. Instead, the website must first provide users with an overview of what’s to come, including the application requirements and the next steps. This can be just a few lines telling them of the benefits, the things that are expected and an instant access to their emails soon after they are done.

Let’s have a look at Yahoo as an example (Image 8). It doesn’t do a perfect job. But it’s nearly there. All the information that the user is expected to provide during the registration process is described up front.

Lending a helping hand

We all know that people fumble along the way. Heck, sometimes I come across forms that I don’t understand. Therefore, it is essential to provide users with online help whenever needed.

For applications that drive business, a toll free number is essential as this brings in the revenue. But with the case of an email service provider, online help would suffice.

The visibility and location of the help link is equally important. By providing this, you can ensure that users not only find it quickly but also feel safe just by seeing it. This is also useful for first time users who are just transitioning from the real world of letter writing to the web world of emails.

None of the websites that I reviewed follow this practice successfully.

Language aid

There are websites that allow users to view their services in the language they choose. This should also be the case with web forms. Choosing the language of their choice gives them freedom and control. It also helps them move forward and register as they can be assured that the website caters to their needs as well.

Save and continue

Let’s say that the basic goal is to register online, so why not just save users’ information automatically as they proceed? A basic “Save and Continue” button would not only tell users that their information is automatically saved but it would also allow them to access the information if they need to resume the application later.

Now if your form is just a page long, you would obviously need a button that reads “submit” or “done”.

Most websites only follow the later.

2. Orientation

Form title

Ensuring that the page header follows a clear task flow from the preceding cue helps applicants orient themselves to the page. Most websites do this successfully. Let’s take a look at the example below (Image 10). Gmail follows a clear flow from one page to another, telling the users where they are at each specific point in time.

Progress indicator

How ever short or long your application form maybe, users need to know their path ahead. A well-positioned progress indicator outlining the entire application process helps users see what lies ahead of them. There’s no use of providing the progress indicator on the left or the right of the form. Users need it up front as they do not tend to look to the left or the right of the form when they are entering information into an application. The best way to grab the user’s attention is to display the progress indicator on the top of every page of the application.

Let’s have a look at an example below (Image 11). This website has got the concept right. Yet, it can further deliver what’s best for users at this point. If you are providing users with a form, make sure that you tell them what each step entails. For example, Step 1: Enter your personal details. The example below does provide a progress indicator by telling users of the number of steps ahead. Yet, it fails to mention the step details.

Progress feedback

More than 60% of web-based forms that I’ve encountered add in extra steps along the way, ones not included in the progress indicator. As applicants do not see all the steps up front, they are baffled when additional steps start appearing. When you tell users that the form entails 3 steps, don’t cheat them. Keep it to 3 however tempted you might be. With the example above (Image 11), users are probed into a number of pages, viewing the same orientation feedback for pages to come. Make sure that each step is provided on the same page. Moving them through pages and providing them with the same orientation feedback is only going to cause confusion.

3. Chunking

People perceive information more easily when related parts are grouped. This increases users’ efficiency and reduces reading effort. Chunking information into related parts helps users better understand information to navigate more effectively.

Headers

Ensure that you break the form into logical content groups and provide relevant headers for each information chunk. I have seen more than 90% of web forms that just provide the main header and then continue with about 20 questions on the same page. This can overwhelm a user. A quick way to organize information into groups would be to do a card sort with potential users of the application or even your co-workers. An example of effective chunking is found at Yahoo and My Way (Image 12 and 13).

A clever trick is to number the chunks to allow users to perceive how much is left and also to perceive that they are moving forward. It provides clear direction of a way forward.

Labels

Labels on individual pages within the application process must be related to the main header as well as its elements. For example, forms should display a clear and simple header along with related sub-headers. In the example above (Image 12 and 13), the sub-headers (labels) are clearly grouped with their header. You have personal information and password information separated with clear headers that define the structure. This provides clarity and direction.

As usability practitioners, we need to first and foremost understand the user’s intentions and expectations, in order to provide an online experience that accommodates them. The image below (Image 14) shows the mapping between the user’s intentions and expectations and the ways in which the usability practitioner can help accommodate them in order to ensure the ultimate success of online application forms.

The journey of creating a successful online application form requires three people working in parallel: the usability practitioner, the designer, and the user. The usability practitioner needs to keep in mind the big picture. The designer needs to have a clear understanding of all the details that will go into the form’s structure. The user helps shape the overall approach to the application form and ensures its ultimate success.

Effective use of forms on websites

Summary: People don't like filling out forms in the real world, and especially not while using the web. Forms are complicated, distracting, and take control away from the user. That is, unless they're designed effectively.

Most people hate filling out tax forms, registration forms, ballots, and so on. In fact, all kinds of new technologies are being developed to speed up delivery of common information (like telephone numbers, addresses, names, birthdates, and social service numbers), and prevent excessive use of forms. Yet users are still forced to fill out forms, to accomplish all kinds of simple tasks, because forms are perceived as an effective means of gathering information. They aren't always effective for users, and certainly aren't always effective for the recipients of the information, either.

Some common user-perceived problems with forms

forms are long and complicated (they require a lot of cognitive activity, and interrupt flow)
forms frequently aren't clear, and discerning their precise purposes can be impossible
forms usually force users to answer questions, even if the user perceives the questions to be irrelevant
forms take control away from the user
websites often yell at users if they don't fill out forms correctly

If users don't understand why they are forced to answer a bunch of questions, in a very particular way, to achieve an unclear purpose, they are going to have a negative experience. That might cause them to simply leave the website, or to miss out on the positive benefits that await them if they fill out the form correctly.

Some common owner-discovered problems with forms

the information collected by the form has to be requested again by someone else within the company
most of the information collected by the form is useless
the form isn't helping the business achieve a set goal, or isn't applicable to any goals
the important information users provide via the form is too thin (in other words, users aren't providing accurate or specific information)
the form isn't being used as much as was anticipated
few users are using the form for its intended purpose (if it has one)
users aren't accessing the value-added portion of the website that using a form leads to

Forms are very mechanical by nature, but humans aren't. Because of interface constraints, it's much easier for most people to write a specific message than to deliver the same information by filling out a form (think of the repetitive mouse movements required to select a birthdate from a complex popup menu widget). In many cases, if a user has reached a form, it's because they want something, or they want to communicate something to the people who run a website. They might have trouble trying to squeeze their thoughts into a narrowly-designed framework: a problem very similar to being forced to answer "yes" or "no" to a question when the answer should really be "maybe". If the message that the user needs to communicate is "maybe", then a human is much more able to process the information, and discover its meaning, than a computer is.

When are forms useful?

Obviously, forms are necessary for certain processes:

collecting large quantities of statistical or otherwise quantifiable information
surveys
signup mechanisms
login mechanisms
search mechanisms

Feedback systems almost never require forms. Feedback forms are usually unnecessarily convoluted and frustrating. If a form is going to be used to direct information to a specific recipient or group, just indicate a specific email address to which the feedback should be sent. Give pointers with regard to what information users should provide, but don't force them to reveal information they are not comfortable with handing out to (potentially) complete strangers. Building trust and confidence is an essential part of positive user experience.

In circumstances where a form of some kind is necessary, it's best to keep it simple. In almost all cases, users want to be more effective, which includes getting things done hassle-free, and as quickly as possible. Therefore, forms should have few controls, and shouldn't require excessive cognitive processing or repetitive physical movements to complete.

Here are some common form design mistakes to avoid:

long popup menus with lists of 150 nearly identical terms (such as lists of countries or professions; lists of two-letter abbreviations are exceptionally bad)
asking for the same (or similar) information more than once
asking for information that isn't relevant to the user's goals or task at hand (forget forms as a bonus market research tool)
forcing users to fill out information (unless it's something absolutely necessary for maintaining user control like a user ID or password)
forcing users to somehow communicate or build conversation with controls (no boolean buttons or complex search syntax forms)
a form layout that puts might on will (borrowed from Alan Cooper: if most people just fill out one field and click "Submit:", put additional options after the submit button)

Tips for effective form use

I worked with a company that offered a very personal service to users. That meant that a registration system was required, and users would have to log in and log out. We ended up designing a service that users could browse before registration, but could only personalize after registration. The registration process was made as simple as possible: users were only required to enter a login and password to join. Additional information wasn't requested right away, but instead users were casually reminded to provide some more information, particularly their email address (for password retrieval). Otherwise, users only had to provide more personal information when it was necessary to help the user accomplish a given goal: for instance, users had to provide an address when they ordered a product for the first time.

The same service had a number of other simple forms for searching, logging in, and ordering products. In each case, we found out what was absolutely essential to the user, and how to most effectively design the form to keep users informed and in control.

Here are some guidelines that I kept in mind while working with the client to design the forms:

use controls for the same purpose that they're used for in operating system interfaces (i.e. correct use of radio buttons and check boxes)
collect information in bits and pieces as it's required from the user's point of view
determine the minimum information necessary for collection, so that the user remains in flow and doesn't become frustrated with the website
only use a form if it has a very clear advantage for users over a less mechanical method, such as email
use less restrictive controls (fewer radio buttons, but more text fields)
make the form as "optional" as possible
ensure that the user will never have to provide the same information twice
test the form with the recipients of the information to make sure its contents are practical, and to eliminate anything that isn't practical

When considering use of a form, it's important to remember how much most people hate filling out complicated ballots, tax returns, registration forms, and surveys. Web forms are no more fun.

25 Web Form Optimization Tips

Stop for a moment and consider the goals of your website. Regardless of whether it’s a purchase through a shopping cart, a lead generation, white paper download, or a email opt, I’m going to bet every one of these actions requires a customer to use a web form.

With web forms playing such an important role in the completing goals, it goes without saying that we should optimize the heck out of them. Below are 25 tips for doing just that.

Ditch the Captchas: Captcha’s are great for blocking spam, but some evidence suggests they are just as good at blocking conversions. A little spam isn’t the end of the world, and definitely isn’t worth losing conversions over. If you must use a Captcha, make sure it’s easy to read.
Remove Unnecessary Fields: Do you really need to ask for your customers date of birth and gender? Even if your customers aren’t concerned about privacy issues, odds are they’re lazy and might just abandon your excessively inquisitive form. Here’s some great advice from Get Elastic on registration forms.
Keep It Simple: Just because we can use CSS to do all sorts of fancy things with text boxes, doesn’t mean we should. Keeping form fields simple will ensure that customers understand their purpose and won’t confuse them with design elements.
Clear the Clear Button: Having a clear button next to the submit button just makes it easier for customers to accidentally delete what they’ve entered. Skip this unnecessary feature.
Cancel the Cancel Button: In the case of long or multi-part form pages, such as checkouts, don’t give customers the option to cancel their decision. That’s equivalent to a commission driven salesperson asking, “Do you really want to buy this?”
Label Required Fields: People want to do as little as possible. For this reason, let your customers know what they are required to fill out with an asterisk or similar label.
Use Point of Action References: If customers are getting confused by the information you’re asking for in a particular field, include a small note with a popup link with more information. For example, one of the most common POA references is an explanation of the 3 digit CVV code found on the back of credit cards.
Show Formatting Examples: Some fields should have notes showing how to format them, depending on your database requirements. For example, you might want phone number formatted in a certain way, with or without parenthesis, dashes, etc. In general though, keep these formatting requirements to a minimum in order to keep it simple for customers.
Make it International Friendly: Forms requiring an address can be confusing if they’re built only with US residents in mind. Check out these detailed guidelines for building international friendly forms.
Allow Easy Forward and Backward Movement: Customers rarely maneuver through our website the way we intend them to. In order words, they hit the back button, the forward button, refresh, etc. Depending on how your forms pass data, this could cause error messages such as “this page has expired”. Make sure you test the forward and backward flow of any multiple page forms on your site.
Logical Tab Sequence: Don’t you hate it when you hit tab, and rather than going to the next field, the focus moves somewhere else on the page? This problem is likely due to the way the form is laid out with HTML tables. Make sure your forms tabs in a logical sequence to prevent customers from accidentally skipping fields.
Server Side Validation: There’s 2 ways to ensure that your visitors are entering correct data into fields. You can use client-side scripting (such as Javascript which is browser dependent) or server side error processing. In addition to server side validation being less reliant on the user’s browser settings, it’s also more secure.
Clear Error Messages: When displaying error messages when customers enter invalid data, make sure your messages are clear and well placed. This means saying “Please enter an email address” rather than something vague like “you must fill out all fields.” A best practice is taking them right back to the field with incorrect data, and displaying the error message next to it.
Show What’s Needed When Its Needed: It’s best to hide form fields until you know they are absolutely needed. For example, if you already know your user is from the US, you can dynamically hide the province field and show the state drop down box instead.
Logical List Order: When using drop down lists or radio button lists, make sure you order them in a logical way, listing items higher if they are selected more often. In other words, if 90% of your customers buy from the USA, don’t list Afghanistan as your first option, and United States at the very bottom.
AJAX Validation: Some sites have begun to validate form inputs as soon as the user tabs out of the field. This can be very effective, since it does not break the flow of the process. Its easier to correct an error immediately after entering it rather than after the whole form is completed.
Remember Me Feature: For login forms, allow customers to choose a “remember me” option, which uses a cookie to fill in login information the next time. Who wants to remember all those passwords anyway?
Set Focus: When a page loads containing a forms, sending the cursor to the first required field will prevent users from having to click into the field in order to start typing. This can be accomplished with a simple JavaScript function.
Avoid Obnoxious Password Requirements: Ever received this annoying error? “Your password must contain at least one letter, number, and be least X number of digits.” Requiring passwords to be formatted a certain way may help security, but it will likely discourage return visits since visitors must now remember an unfamiliar password.
Progress Indicators: For forms that span multiple pages, include a progress indicator letting people know where they are in the process. These are most commonly seen during checkout and would include steps such as “Shipping Info > Payment Info > Receipt Confirmation.”
Minimize Scrolling & Pages: A good case can be made to limit the number of pages in a a multi-part form in order to prevent customers from abandoning. However, an opposing case can also be made than ridiculously long, single pages forms that require scrolling can scare off customers. There’s no sure-fire rule here, its a perfect opportunity to perform your own a/b test.
Strong Call to Action Buttons: Sometimes “Submit” just doesn’t cut it. In other words, be specific and action oriented with your form buttons.
Use External Labels: Have you ever used a form that labeled the field with text that disappears when you click into it? This can be a great space saver, but extremely confusing if a customer forgets what the field is for since the label has disappeared. Here’s a great example of why external form labels are more effective.
Prioritize Size and Location of Multiple Button Forms: On a form with multiple action buttons, make sure you emphasize the most important button leading to the conversion. For example, if your final order confirmation screen has 2 buttons, “Finalize Order” and “Edit Order”, make sure the “Finalize Order” button is larger and more prominent.
Clear Confirmations: Have you ever filled out a long, tedious form, clicked submit, only to be returned to what seems like the same page with the form empty? You can do everything right with your form, but if you drop the ball on the confirmation, your customers will be helplessly confused. Since those days, I took myself to learn more and more about search engines and ads. I have experimented with keywords, META tags, the intervals between presentations and even "doorway" pages. My research over the years has proved very valuable for me and my colleagues. I have even been published in 2600 the magazine of my knowledge of the search engines.

Step 2: Keywords are not just for META tags

Over the years, META tags have been hawked as "the" way to get good listings in search engines. At first, this was true - the META tags, when it was established in the specifications of HTML, search engines put much weight on them. Does all this information fit into the site with the goals and objectives? In other words, if you are creating a website on cats, you probably do not want to include articles and pictures of your ski trip - unless, of course, you have a cat who skis.

I've found is generally good to do this several times over several days. Write down your thoughts and organize them as needed. Then go home and come back the next day. Repeat the process. Do this as many times as necessary until only feels like it is done.

Do not spend an outrageous amount of time in any of this. The whole process of a good size website should have only a few evenings. Remember, you are defining, in general, what we are communicating. The details come later.

When finished, you will find that the rest of the site analysis and design process will go much smoother. and that - you know what they are trying to communicate. Sure that makes it easier to do so.
